Two vulnerabilities have been identified in various VMware products, which could be exploited by local attackers to compromise a vulnerable system.
The first issue is caused by a heap overflow error in the Host Guest File System (HGFS) shared folders feature, which may allow an unprivileged guest process to execute arbitrary code in the context of the vmx process on the host. In order to exploit this vulnerability, Shared folders must be enabled, and a folder must be selected from the host system to be shared. No folders are shared by default.
The second vulnerability is caused by an error within the VMCI feature, which could allow a guest to execute arbitrary code in the context of the vmx process on the host.
